Embodying the Face: The Intersubjectivity of Portraits and Self-portraits

Abstract The topic of the human face is addressed from a biocultural perspective, focusing on empirical investigation how represented, perceived, and evaluated in artistic portraits self-portraits XVth to XVIIth century. To do so, crucial role played by social cognition introduced, starting development, showing that neonatal facial imitation face-to-face dyadic interactions provide grounding elements for construction intersubjective bonds. neuroscience perception concisely presented discussed, together with psychophysics gaze exploration, introducing notions left visual field advantage (LVFA) bias (LGB). results experiments emotional aesthetic rating are reported, despite participants’ inability tell apart, greater emotional, communicative-social, ratings were attributed self-portraits. It concluded experimental aesthetics can contribute better understand face, hence ourselves.
